|
The
Olympic Games are so called from being held at Olympia,
near Elis in Peloponnesus.
|
| General
opinion is that they were established by Heracles
to celebrate a major victory in 1222 BC, the Greek
geographer and historian, Strabo (c 60 BC -after
AD 21) objects to this opinion and states that
Homer would have mentioned them if this were the
case.It is now accepted that they were founded
by Oxylos, whose decendant Ifitos rejuvenated
the games in 777 BC. |
|
The
history of these ancient games is only clearly recorded
from 776 BC after reorganisation and revival. From 776 BC
they were held every fifth year. They were held in the first
month after the lapse of four years from the previous games.
The
first day of the Olympics was allotted to offering
sacrifices, arranging competitors and judges.
There were also contests for the trumpeters.
The
second day was devoted to boys, and they contested
in running, wrestling and boxing.
The
third day was for the men and their contests
included races in heavy clad armour. |
|
 |
On
the fourth day events included throwing the discus, throwing
the spear, running, leaping, wrestling which was followed
by chariot races with many contests for the heralds.
The
Olympics terminated on the fifth day with more sacrifices,
banquets for the victors and the presentation of the crowns.
 |
| Women
were not entitled to take part in the Olympics,
except as owners in the horse races, while being
strictly prohibited from watching the games. |
|
The
games were banned by the Christian Emperor Theodosius 1
in AD 393, probably because of their pagan practices.
Olympic
Games (Modern)
In
1894, representatives of many countries met in Paris to consider
the revival of the Olympic Games.
This
meeting resulted in the games being revived and the first
modern games were held in 1896 at Athens.
The
ancient stadium was rebuilt with a seating capacity
of 45,000.
There
were several modern introductions as well as the
original sports which included tennis,, fencing,
cycling and swimming.
The
two following meetings were held in Paris (1900)
and St. Louis (1904).
The
Greeks decided they wanted games with a more Hellenic
stamp and held a festival in Athens (1906). |
|
 |
Two
years later the games were held in London (1908). Subsequent
meetings were held in Stockholm (1912), Antwerp (1920), Paris
(1924), Amsterdam (1928), Los Angeles (1932).
