During
the 1890's many people claimed to have invented the internal
combustion engine but, only one person had the patent on the
four stroke operating sequence.
In
1867, Nikolaus August Otto, aged 34, a German engineer, developed
the four stroke Otto cycle.
The
modern motor car engine with its maze of wiring, internal
computers and sensors is based on and uses the same basic
operating system as the engine which Otto invented over 130
years ago.
Henry
Ford
In
1896, Ford completed his first self propelled vehicle which
he called the Quadricycle.
The
Quadricycle had two forward gears and no reverse.
After
two failed attempts to establish an automobile manufacturing
company, Henry Ford formed the Ford Motor Company in 1903
producing 2-3 cars per day.
